One of my favorite things in life right now is napping in the afternoon with The Boy. Once he settles into sleep, lets go of all that frenetic energy which characterizes his three-year-old waking self, and the two of us can snuggle together quietly on our big bed… There’s nothing more delicious. Especially now that it has begun to be fall-like here. The weather has broken, settling into a balmy mid-70’s with little humidity and a slow-moving breeze. We leave the back door open (our bedroom opens out to the back porch), and I lie on the bed listening to the mockingbirds trilling their repertoire, the wind chimes ding ding dinging, and my child’s slow and gentle breath. I know I should feel guilty for this self-indulgence–there’s always lots of other things I should be doing. But who knows how many more of these afternoons there will be? How much longer will E need a nap? How much longer will I be home during the day to take a nap myself? How can I do anything other than lie on the bed, savoring each and every one of these delicious, fleeting moments, before drifting off to sleep?
